Costumer Reviews

I have a really independent and strong willed little girl who is pretty sure she knows everything already and is in charge of the home. I also inherited a bad, bad temper from my own father, and a set of unproductive and rage-fueled methods for handling discipline in the home. I was terrified I would squelch my daughter's independence and irreparably damage our relationship, until I read this amazing book. It's a simple, incredibly effective technique that gives parents a rapid response to quietly and calmly shut down any obnoxious behaviour, along with encouragement to provide constant positive reinforcement and love. It has revolutionized my relationship with my daughter, who now knows exactly where the boundaries lie and what to expect when she violates them. I haven't slammed a door since I read the book, and I no longer fear that I'm perpetuating a cycle of anger and harsh punishment. Highly recommend it.

The reason why there are different parenting advice/methods out there it's because not one single kid fits the same mold, as well as not every parent discipline their kid (s) the same.

As a parent, one has to sift through all the advice, use your gut feeling, and stick to the method that works.

You have to figure out what works FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. I previously used a type of "Emotion Coaching" method, and it didn't work 100%. It's too much talking, too much explanation, and it puts the majority of the power on the kid, not the parent. It should be the other way around, in my opinion. It just didn't work in our household and with our child. Does that make that method horrible one? NO! I just moved on to the next!

So far, the 123 Magic discipline method has been extremely useful and eye-opening. It has worked in our household, and many of the tantrums/manipulation tactics have nearly dissapeared. So, I do love this book and will recommend it to friends.

Edit: 1/9/12

Changing my review to 4 stars. I just tried to highlighting as another review mentioned and it does indeed smear the ink a bit. But using a bit higher quality sharpie highlighters, it didn't really smear much, if at all. While I don't really highlight first aid (b/c everything's relevant and important), others might find it a flaw.

Edit: 1/6/12

After using for a week, I really have to say this update is MUCH better than previous updates. Is it perfect? No. Definitely not. But did they make a lot of changes for the better?

in the 2010 = 2011: the book came out almost identical, except for a changing the cover

in the 2011 = 2012: there are multiple changes, which in my personal opinion, is for the better. They took the colored platelets at the end and incorporated them into the text itself. Why is this beneficial? Well, it allows you to make faster associations. There've been many studies on memory that have shown pictures/diagrams etc will improve recall.

also, people complain about errors. All books have errors! But what makes First Aid so great is that they have an errata that is CONSTANTLY being updated. You'll be hard pressed to find any resource that does this as frequently.

----------

I received my copy in the mail this morning. I've looked through it for a few hours and here are my thoughts...

First Aid will always be amazing for the boards. This edition, in my opinion, far exceeds their usual yearly updates. They got rid of the individual colored images and integrated the diagrams/pictures into the text itself--NEXT to the related topic. The good thing is that they didn't over-do the pictures. First aid has always been, and always should be, a review/outline of the most pertinent material for step 1. They have not abandoned that purpose.

In summary, I believe this is a great updated edition of first aid. Must better than previous editions in which the only thing they updated was 2010 = 2011 on the cover. It's definitely a great buy

I'll try to update this with any errors or other thoughts.

I've looked through both the 2010 and 2011 editions of the book, and my pre-order of this 2012 edition came in today. The full color makes you actually want to keep reading it, while the 2010/11 editions it was easy to get sick of after a few pages because, although it was a lot of useful info, it just appeared bland and dry after a while. The few extra bucks for this full color edition with better placement of diagrams and pictures makes the understanding a little bit better. As the gold standard of Step 1 review books, I can't recommend this series enough, including this newest edition. As I go through the book I'll add more to this review if I notice anything.

Review

A Globe and Mail Best Book

“1Q84 goes further than any Murakami novel so far, and perhaps further than any novel before it, toward exposing the delicacy of the membranes that separate love from chance encounters, the kind from the wicked, and reality from what people living in the pent-up modern world dream about when they go to sleep under an alien moon.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Murakami’s fiction has grown increasingly relevant to our understanding of the world today, and this time his craft is more refined than ever. . . . This novel—mired in death and fetish, leavened with humor—may become a mandatory read for anyone trying to get to grips with contemporary Japanese culture.” —The Japanese Times“‘Things are not what they seem.’ If Murakami’s ambitious, sprawling and thoroughly stunning new novel had a tagline, that would be it. . . . Orwellian dystopia, sci-fi, the modern world (terrorism, drugs, apathy, pop novels)—all blend in this dreamlike, strange and wholly unforgettable epic.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“You'll find genuine wisdom and emotional depth in 1Q84. Mr. Murakami has gone further here to develop the sensations of loss and isolation.” —The Wall Street Journal“Murakami really does stand alone . . . Which other author can remind you simultaneously of Fyodor Dostoyevsky and JK Rowling, not merely within the same chapter but on the same page? Viewed through the ‘postmodern’ lens, his exemplary blend of a light touch and weighty themes, of high literature and popular entertainment, ticks every box. Posh and pop, sublimity and superficiality, history and fantasy, trash and transcendence: they switch positions and then fuse as the metaphysical speculations of an Ivan Karamazov meet the death-defying adventures of a Harry Potter.” —The Independent (UK)

Praise for Haruki Murakami: "Murakami is like a magician who explain what he's doing as he performs the trick and still makes you believe he has supernatural powers... But while anyone can tell a story that resembles a dream, it's a rare artist, like this one, who can make us feel that we are dreaming it ourselves." — The New York Times Book Review

The long-awaited magnum opus from Haruki Murakami, in which this revered and bestselling author gives us his hypnotically addictive, mind-bending ode to George Orwell's 1984.

The year is 1984. Aomame is riding in a taxi on the expressway, in a hurry to carry out an assignment. Her work is not the kind that can be discussed in public. When they get tied up in traffic, the taxi driver suggests a bizarre 'proposal' to her. Having no other choice she agrees, but as a result of her actions she starts to feel as though she is gradually becoming detached from the real world. She has been on a top secret mission, and her next job leads her to encounter the superhuman founder of a religious cult. Meanwhile, Tengo is leading a nondescript life but wishes to become a writer. He inadvertently becomes involved in a strange disturbance that develops over a literary prize. While Aomame and Tengo impact on each other in various ways, at times by accident and at times intentionally, they come closer and closer to meeting. Eventually the two of them notice that they are indispensable to each other. Is it possible for them to ever meet in the real world?

1Q84 [Hardcover]

Costumer Reviews

I'm a fan, and I liked this book very much. The meticulous, slow Murakami narrative carries us, his readers, across the vast ocean of words that is 1Q84. I liked the pace, the slowness, appreciated the time to get acquainted with the main characters. Unfortunately, it's impossible to believe in many aspects of the book, from the main pillar of the story, the attraction between Tengo and Aomame, to the unpleasant Ushikawa, the set, and most characters. This book is one massive allegory, sometimes harder to decode than other, so will help being fond of Murakami. Suspend your beliefs and slow down, then pick 1Q84 up, and enjoy.

It's been a while since Murakami's last english translation, and even though this book was out for years before it's English language incarnation, it was worth the wait.

1,000 Artist Journal Pages: Personal Pages and Inspirations [Paperback]

Costumer Reviews

I am totally hooked on making art journal pages and was so pumped to find a book devoted to showcasing only journal pages It is a visual feast for the eyes seeing art journal pages from various artists. Not only does it give you ideas for your own art journal but it gives you a glimpse into other people's lives. This is such an amazing book and I refer to it time and time again when I need to give my mojo a kick start or when I just want to treat myself to some visual eye candy! The amazing cover grabs you and pulls you in and from there you go on an artistic journey that leaves your mind thinking of endless possibilities for your own art journal pages.

I love this book. I sit and look at it over and over, always finding something new to be amazed and/or inspired by. It is exactly what it claims to be, 1000 Artist Journal Pages - but I was amazed to find out that the author had received submissions from all over the world to create a truly global, all encompassing and multidimensional book. It is fascinating, and best of all encouraging. The author encourages you to begin if you haven't, to face your fear of the blank page (which was unfortunately one of my greatest fears, until this book). You can't help but be inspired by any page you look at. Every art medium, from every place in the world, from 1000 different hearts and minds - are presented in this book. While it isn't a how-to book, it is so much better. There could not be instructions for such a personal art. Such a fantastic book, possibly my favourite, definately my most inspiring.

1,000 Ideas for Decorating Cupcakes, Cookies & Cakes [Paperback]

Costumer Reviews

I love this book, but you must be an experienced decorator to appreciate it, which is why I gave it only 3 stars. It is all pictures, and they are great, but there is NO explanation on how to make ANY of the things they show. A good decorator will be able to figure it out, but a beginner will not. It is basically a lovely picture book.

The photos are simply magical! But this is purely for inspiration since there is no information at all in this book. No technique, no description, nothing but images. So you have to figure it out buy yourself if you want to recreate it at home.

1,000 Places to See Before You Die [Paperback]

Costumer Reviews

Having worn my original copy of the book down to where pages are filled with my own notes and scribbles everywhere, I had no idea how a revision could be better than the first. But I bought it to have a "clean" copy. I am over-the-moon excited by the new inclusions and additional comments to the old ones. I have no idea how Ms Schultz managed to add so much more to the original such as places to see on the way to get to the places in the book as well as the color photos. And, it seems to me, there are many less expensive options to the uber expensive accommodations that have their own unique style and charm and are not just a "cheaper option down the road". I looove this book!

If you plan to buy Patricia Schultz's latest offering to the travelling public, make sure your passport is up-to-date! After looking through even a few of the alluring photographs and charming descriptions of places you've never even heard of and now must visit, you might also want to reconsider how much your heirs can expect to receive. Even though I know I will only actually go to a fraction of the places I've fallen in love with, thanks to Ms. Schultz, I feel, at least for a few moments of my day, that my world has been expanded every time I imagine myself in any of the entries. Can't say anything about the app that comes with the revised edition: I'm putting the Ipad $ towards airfare!
